Listen Up
These are crazy times indeed.
Unusual? Yes. Disturbing? Oh yeah.
Overwhelmingly mind-blowing? Definitely.
Then, add multiple sclerosis into the fray and you get an absolute shit-storm.
A stressor like mixing Mentos & Diet Coke.
It’s really bad if you are a news hound such as myself. I like to keep up on the latest goings-on, but there comes a time when you need to break the cycle. Disconnect. And take a breather.
Today (and everyday the past couple of months) has been one of those times.
I will share with you my escape plan when it gets to be too much. When my Goodyear Airship sized head seems ready to explode, I like to step outdoors…take a moment…and listen up.
I listen to the breeze blow through the trees. The rustle of leaves that didn’t get raked up. I listen to the birds chirp away unaware of the current crisis. Listen to the sound of a distant lawnmower (thinking I should probably do the same!).
I just listen. Letting the outside world be my entertainment.
Look, when you have ears the size of a satellite dish, you hear stuff. Lots of stuff.
Outdoors you will find more than enough sound to keep you occupied & content.
I know many people who can’t go outside without their phone or iPod pumping music through wires shoved into their ear holes.
Shame. Shame not to hear a robin’s call. Or the buzz of a big fat bumblebee.
I’m sorry but I will never enjoy a song by Maroon 5 as much as I savor listening to rolling thunder (the Mother Nature kind–NOT monster truck kind).
Tune out. Tone down. Turn off.
Sometimes that’s what it takes to reclaim your sanity.
It may help soothe the edginess of MS as well.
So step outside and listen up.
What do you hear? Tell me what sounds put you at ease.
Take some time to listen to what matters most. It will be time well spent.
Be Well. Keep moving.
P.S. Please note in the picture I am not using a cotton swab–but a drumstick for a bass drum.

I like listening to the sound of rain, not torrential rain, but light steady rain.
I can’t wait for things to get back to normal, if that is even possible. This week I had to have a ” telephone appointment” with my neurologist because they were not seeing patients in the office. I opted out of the ” video appointment”. However, earlier in the month I did have to go in for my Ocrevus appointment. You were screened when you first went in the building, and it was easy breezy.
Margaret,
I too love the sound of rain. I enjoy being on a porch watching it fall-even heavy stuff!
That’s good to know they are still doing MS treatments. My next Ocrevus date in in July. Thanks for sharing the info!
Totally agree Doug. Thanks for sharing. Being outside rocks my world !
Joanne,
I don’t even have to be outside–often I sit in front of a window. The squirrels playing in the backyard will stop & look at me like “that dude is watching us again.”
Thanks for your comment!
